Raw Meat + Fashion =

I do love a bit of subversion in fashion (a quick search reveals I have used the words 'subversive' and 'subversion' 122 times in total on Hapsical, which means that one of the two words crops up almost in every third post!), so something about these meat print shorts rather struck me. Wrong on so many levels, but very funny (love the packaging), and of course very subversive. You can buy them online from the aptly named Weird Shop (based in Brazil) here. I'm off to the Caribbean in just under a month and I was thinking Etro or Vilebrequin for new swimming shorts, but now these are kind of tempting...

On the dubious subject of fashion+meat, various other things spring to mind...

First, the wonderful, disturbing magazine Meat Paper (which I blogged about here):

(The minced meat suit reminds me of that surreal America's Next Top Model shoot where Tyra made the girls pose in underwear made from raw meat...)

I also keep thinking of an iconic Helmut Newton (?) picture of models posing among carcasses in an abattoir (with all sorts of erotic and sexist undertones), but I can find no evidence for it online, so now I'm wondering if I dreamt up the whole thing (now that wouldn't be disturbing in the least...)

What I did come across was this rather good Guy Bourdin photo:

But for the really bloody, graphic stuff, Steven Klein is your man. Looking for the possibly-imaginary Helmut Newton pictures, I came across three Klein editorials, the first for American Vogue in 2004, the second for L'Uomo Vogue in 2005 , and the third for Vogue Hommes Autumn/Winter 2009 edition.

If you're a vegetarian, you might want to look away now.

The Big Chill from American Vogue:

I'm sure Helmut Newton has done something like this, but more stylishly... anyone know what I'm talking about?

I think fashion is unique in being able to take that murky area where necrophilia meets bestiality and use it to promote an aspirational product and lifestyle...

  3. I love the meat-shorts! Gives a whole new meaning to the meat market that is a popular beach.

Rather disturbing fashion photography, I think there is something missing from that 2009 shoot, remember seeing it last year, I think it could have been far more interesting if the photographer got past the blood. There is such beautiful imagery that could come from an abattoir, strange to say, but there could be. All that repetition, the contrasting colours.

@Pretentious b, it IS really disturbing isn't it?! Only fashion can take that murky area where necrophilia meets bestiality and use it to promote an aspirational product and lifestyle!

@Fake Sartorialist, I agree it could have been done at lot better. Even if Helmut Newton never did it, I'm sure he would have done it well.
