I've always been quite fascinated by late 80s to mid 90s Versace, when 'more is less' was very much the mantra, and glammed-up supermodels reigned supreme. I was therefore pleased to discover the blog of London-based Zone 7 Style, specialists in "rare deadstock vintage" (particularly Versace), who hold sales in London from time to time, and who offer a variety of services associated with rare 80s and 90s designer vintage.I knew that flashy, vintage Versace is almost a mini style subculture among the Dalston (east London) set, where the 90s in general are currently having a bit of a moment, but until I visited Zone 7's blog I had no idea that there were hardcore vintage Versace collectors (no post-Gianni stuff, please). It is, however, not difficult to see why pieces from the period, especially the rich, exuberant and surprisingly complex prints on silk items, appeal to collectors today. The printed jeans are just outrageous too, and who doesn't love some Versace bling or gold-encrusted sunglasses?!

Vintage Versace shirts from Vagabond NYC, and dress from Swank Vintage.I then discovered the Versace Campaign Archive thread on The Fashion Spot, and spent about an hour, when I should have been working, going through all 72 pages of it... so much amazing imagery, so many supermodels! All the following images are from there (let's be thankful for public-spirited fashion fans with scanners!). I should have been organised and written down the season of each of the campaigns and matched them to the images here, but if you're interested or want to see more, you can see the thread HERE (tip: start on the last page and work backwards for larger images and fewer broken links).
Love this. Surely the inspiration behind the Givenchy SS10 campaign...

ReplyDeleteI think Versace started to become gimmicky right after the 1980s. I looked at this stuff kinda playful silly and bling bling goudy. I always like the name versayyyze vs the other way to. Lol I thought he was having fun more so than anything.
