One of our favourite designers ever, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, decorated the mannequins in his London store with Lego jewellery earlier this year. Castelbajac (or JC DC as he's known by his East London grime scene fans) is an aristocratic French 'pop art' designer, who's stuff is currently very big among the 'nu rave/nu grave' youth subcultures (M.I.A, Yelle, and Santogold have been dressed by him recently, and Man Like Me and Busy P have performed at his shows), but he's actually been designing amazing things for years before this stuff became fashionable, has dressed many a celeb, collaborated with modern artists, and had two major museum exhibitions in London and Paris. Generally, he's a bit of an all-round legend, and is the undisputed king of all that is bright, fun, and 'poptastic' in fashion. Lots of people haven't heard of him because he's more of an artist than a fashion designer (in that he puts creativity before commerce and PR much more than other big designers do).
Anyway, we loved Castelbajac's Lego accessories so much (see pics below, kindly sent to us by his 'Lego Wizard' in Paris) that we decided we'd have to make our own, because the stuff in the store was sadly for display only.

While we were sitting around thinking about digging out our old childhood Lego, Castelbajac presented his ss09 collection in Paris, where Lego actually made it onto the runway (and in such style: he Lego-covered New Era caps are mental!)
All you need to get in on with Lego action too is Lego (you can either use your old childhood Lego, complete with bite marks - well, ours was bitten anyway - or you can order the individual bricks you need from the Lego online store), some gold rings and chain, and some glue. Plan your designs, build them, then glue them together (as this handy guide they sent us demonstrates). What could be easier (or more fun?!)

Here's what we came up with:

To complete the childhood experience, Castelbajac bear was helping us:

We couldn't resist trying the glasses:

Next up, the baseball cap!

It has to be said that trends and fads come and go but JC/DC on his Highway To Hell has been consistent for decades. Clever, witty and most of all Fun!Some designs look unwearable on the runway but the boutique versions are a relief. Its only recently that I've noticed how copied JC/DC is.He's an obvious Guru to Jeremy Scott and the late Moschino.
